No Download Necessary: Quantum Project Hits Big Screen
"But movie studios may have a bit of an advantage over music groups. "Music feels ‘free’ already -- you hear it for free on the radio and you’ve been able to get it for free on Napster or its 50 clones, though I’m not condoning that in any way. With movies, we can say, ‘You can’t steal this but you can buy it for a few bucks.’ Music companies may have already corrupted this to an irreparable point. Napster didn’t damage the music industry, the music industry’s refusal to deliver music in a new and useful way damaged the music industry."
Better move quick. I don't know whether the 400,000 downloaded movies per day figure I recently saw is correct, but then see how much stuff you can find on WinMX. Since this software lets you resume broken downloads (even on another machine), it's easy to basically download 24 hours a day. Of course 400Mb divx movies are not top quality, but more are watchable enough that you won't miss going to the theater but for the most graphical movies (eg. Crouching Tiger.) With the 45Gb drives that come so cheap today, just build a stock of movies to watch at a later time, then it's free view on demand.
04/03/01 update: hint to some people who should know better: you can leave your computer on.
