For some reason I had completely missed the fact that Adobe bought Syntrillium Software last year. Here's a review of Adobe Audition, the new name of Cool Edit Pro. That puts Apple, Sony and Adobe with roughly matching product ranges. Interestingly, the three of them mostly bought their way into audio and video editing, rather than creating those applications organically.
