The More It Scales... The More It Needs To

Even with all the help Moore's Law provides, it seems there's a never-ending need for more web scalability, which probably reflects that companies no longer want to just through more hardware at a problem and instead try to get better bang for the buck through improved software architecture, and that increased online use (in hours spent by user or transactions per second or whatever else metric you want to use) is still significantly ramping up. A few recent datapoints:

  • Werner Vogels joins Amazon.com as Director of Systems Research
  • Jeff Bezos muses about what to do with the additional power in this Fast Company profile
  • Technorati had to add 60 servers to its farm yet it's still barely keeping up
